Reading: Harry Turtledove - What Few Remain
Basically the premise is: What if the Union never intercepted Order 191 during the American Civil War thus losing the war?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_191
Basically the US has alienated France and England who now support the CSA and Germany is their sole backers. The CSA have purchased a piece of Mexico and now have a seaports on both coasts and a railway line to link the two forthcoming. The US does not stand for this and so instigate a new war against the CSA.
The story includes loads of famous names and *possible* outcomes and futures they may have seen in this timeline. My favorite is Abe Lincoln as a Communist.
I'm about 1/3 of the way through and really enjoying it so far. What Few Remain is the prologue of the longer series dealing with World War I following this timeline. I have never read anything of Turtledove's but was really jonesing for an "alternate history" story to read and this (so far) is really wetting my whistle.

Re: Reading: Harry Turtledove - What Few Remain
I've read the book a few months ago, i personally loved it, although Abe lincoln leading america toward Socialism kind of irks me, atleast ol Teddy Roosevelt tried to put a stop to it in the Great War novels.
If you like this one, your also going to like Turtledoves ''World War'' series where a Race of Lizards with modern equipment invade in 1942, only to have a hard time when they they realize they suck when it comes to War.

You guys should check out "1632" and its other books by Eric Flint. A small town of americans get transported in time to the year 1631 in Europe by some thing that a race of aliens did and they are dropped in the middle of the 30 year war. REALLY fun books to read, nothing like bunch of kids on dirtbikes with shotguns takin on pike formations, they actually have several of the books available online to read much of the chapters.

I don't know if I like my alternate history in that vein. I would prefer to see what the world would be like today if a certain thing happened differently rather than sending a group of kids back in time with dirtbikes and shotguns.

Re: Reading: Harry Turtledove - What Few Remain
Is not a a group of kids, is a town of about 3000 people, the picture on the cover shows a pickup truck with like 3 guys on the back with shotguns and 3 guys with muskets gettign ready to shoot at them. The guy who wrote it is a historian also so even though is science fiction all of the characters they encounter and the historical events are true. is really cool to see how they survive by makign alliances and using their technology to fight off all of Europe. Chek out the chaoters that are posted online, they start from the beguining, that way you wont have to spend any money

I read some of his Alternate History WWII books, I wasn't impressed. Too much attention paid to society and and useless characters, not enough paid to the war.

Grombart, are you referring to Turtledove's WWII series where aliens attack? Or something by Eric Flint?

Yea, read the synopsis of those too, didn't do anything for me (the alien stuff turned me off). This one though is all about the people who would have influenced the war.

I Personally loved the entire series, although the last 4 books (the ones set during the 60's, and the last one where the USA reaches the aliens home world) where somewhat lack luster due to poor editing.
