No GW Grant Tournaments for 2009!
From the GW US community site:
Regrettably, no GW Grand Tournaments for 2009

Due to some restructuring within the business it has been decided that we will not be hosting or running any Games Workshop Grand Tournaments in the US this year.”
We know this will come as a disappointment to many who have enjoyed the resurgence in the GWGTs over the past two years, and as such this isn’t a decision we have entered into lightly.
This will give us the opportunity to step back and develop an even better experience and overall tournament circuit that will be able to apply to all of North America for 2010.
In the meantime, we heartily encourage anyone looking to get their tournament fix in to participate in the remaining shows on the GW Tournament circuit as well as the other great independent tournament and events that will take place throughout the rest of 2009.

While I enjoy the game of WHFB, I'm now totally convinced that the people that run GW are complete idiots.
What a marketing disaster.

Re: No GW Grant Tournaments for 2009!
I doubt it's a marketing disaster as much as it just bleeding the company money. It takes them lots of time and resources to travel the country and set up these big tournaments, no other company does anything remotely like it because of how expensive and difficult it is to do, hence most game companies depend on stores and volunteers to run the tournament scenes of their games.
Dissapointing for the fans of these types of events as it gave many players a feeling of the game being something more than other games as if it was some kind of "professional" game.
Don't see how they can be called idiots if they are doing these changes to help fix their financial problems, they would truly be idiots if they just did nothing and continued to bleed money.

Re: No GW Grant Tournaments for 2009!
GW does not even absorb most of the cost for the event.
GW staff are already paid
GW site for announcements and signups is already there
Paritcipants pay to play, which helps absob GWs cost
Participants spend money at the venue, which helps GW negotiate a good deal for the venue over the weekend (off business time for the record, which is a lower rate)
Now, on to what they loose.
The GT are their premiere events. All marketing oppotunities and publicity buzz for the game on a pro level is lost for an entire year. It is like Hollywood canceling the Oscars. Won't help the wallstreet numbers any that nobody is building a new kick ass army for this year's GTs. Plus, if you snub your fan base, you loose fans.

Yeah, I don't think this was a wise move, at all.

Re: No GW Grant Tournaments for 2009!
It's a LOT more costs involved than simply paying employees to do these events and a website. Venue fees, travel expenses, shipping costs for materials, promotional items, prizes, etc, etc. Lot of stuff is involved in doing these events.
As has been noted before attendance to the events have been decreasing and to have traveling circuit of tournaments of such large scale going around takes alot of time and money. It's not great for GW and it's fan base, but do you truly believe they would take something that would be profitable and just stop doing it? There obviously was something wrong going on, forcing changes to be made for the next season.

Re: No GW Grant Tournaments for 2009!
I don't know if they were making any money or not from it, but I think the other aspects of the GTs are important. Here are a couple (some silly, some not).
1. It promotes the game, both among regular players and others who have no idea. Then again, maybe because it's all all-inclusive event (are the GT usually in junction with another convention or no?) then maybe it doesn't get the player base that it needs.
2. What are they gonna talk about now in WD????

Re: No GW Grant Tournaments for 2009!
The GD is part of the GT event specific to painting and conversions.
If they are not going to hold a game tounement, I doubt they will put together an event just to look at painted models.

Ha, they are writing a new rule book as we speak so you can throw out everything you purchased in the last year. Time for them to make some more money!

Re: No GW Grant Tournaments for 2009!
Bill,
I think he meant Games Day which is a separate and I believe more popular event than the GT, in part because of the Golden Demon Painting Competition. .
Not having the GT is not such a big deal.. It's mostly only the hardcore competitors that are going to be really pissed.
If they canceled Games Day... that would be a different ball game.

Ahh, this is true.
Has GW ever considered teaming up with another big convention for a section of it? I mean, thats what BF did last year for their National Grand Tournament and I think it worked out to their advantage.

Re: No GW Grant Tournaments for 2009!
GW has always done their own events instead of running events at other venues. They would do good to perhaps revamp to a more organized play style of structure that involves the community more.
Perhaps with the return in 2010 they will try to be more like other companies instead of elevating themselves higher than all other games. It would be good to see GW integrate itself more with rest of the gaming world instead of always relying on it's own segregated events.
