mini wargaming history Empty mini wargaming history

Post by bromah Tue May 19, 2009 4:15 am

i was exploring the history of my new and third most favorite hobby (the first two being women and ....well i am not sure what two is but I know it's something) Mini wargaming

I found this article quite interesting
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Wars

it's the history of the first written rule book to a mini wargame. It was authored by H.G. Wells, the father (imo) of modern science fiction, in 1913.

I'm actually trying to write up and develop a mini's system/world now. I love love love 40k and used to do minis for dnd when I was a boy. However I feel that certain aspects of the business are killing our beloved hobby. Prepainted mini's! overpriced box sets! incredibly lengthy periods between releases! a Lack of new and inventive ideas! Rediculous arms races (my god man look at the Imperials!, imagine how absurd the tau and bugs are going to be!)

I just think that they've gotten detached from the gamer community. Or highered a bunch of meta gamer prics to write the rules....either way some fresh thoughts might be a great thing at this time.

The sad thing is that I actually read this book. It should still be in the FIU library.

Why is that sad, it looks to being interesting light read.
Can you give a brief review? Is it worth reading?

An even better question is, do you really want to?
