Standard 40k list size
I thought it was 1850, but it looks like you guys may have raised that up a bit.....
How many points is the standard 40k game at SAG?

Re: Standard 40k list size
The store itself normally runs between 1850 and 2000. Right now since most tourneys are running at 2000, most of the store runs 2000; but, you can do any points amount and probably find a game.

Re: Standard 40k list size
Not really, it always seems to hover around 2000, with some tournies being run at 1850, 2000, or 2250 it seems.
It probably is best to try to think up around 2000 point lists while having them being flexible with options to swap out to go lower or a bit higher.

Re: Standard 40k list size
No matter what system I have played, I always try and have a different point army builds and I play test them.
That way I have the appropriate army on hand that I am familiar with and there are no surprises.

I think 1850 is the official GW tourney size - but 2K works.

Re: Standard 40k list size
1850 was the general standard for years, but many store run games seem to have jumped to 2000 late 4e to now. Store event organizers are free to choose what they want to run so there is not much "official" gw tourny size anymore especially with them having cut back on their own private events greatly.

Didn't GW cut out ALL grand tournaments in the US to reduce cost and increase profits?

Re: Standard 40k list size
They are supposedly restructuring their tournament approach so they were gonna take at least a year or so off and just do Games Days instead for now. The GT's were also seeing less and less attendance so that obviously was drawing up red flags to them.

Re: Standard 40k list size
The last one was schedule on the same weekend as a major Indy GT in chicago. Not suprisingly attendance was abysmal. It's this kind of attention to detail that GW is known for.
There were tons of people in the Fantasy and 40k events at Baltimore and Vegas GT last year. Vegas GT was always a huge success. It was really something else. *sighs*
I might go to the 2011 Invite in Vegas just to hang out even if I don't qualify for it. I do play poker though so I'll have an excuse to be there.

Re: Standard 40k list size
Oh yeah points level for UK is usually 1500, GTs slowly worked there way up to 1850 in the US and stayed there for a few years till they were disbanded. In the last year or two 40k players have been realizing that is more is better and so 2000 is becoming the new standard. It's a nice round number and when you think about all the lackluster troops you need and HQs are so expensive now... well it just seems like 1850 isn't enough.

QFT. Troops are so worthless, and now that they score and you have to include atleast 3 of them in a 1500 its a huge vice grip on the balls. As a space marine, its almost unbearable. Almost anything can rip up a tactical squad, its just crazy. Attach that to the fact that they NEED a rhino to get to objectives, you're looking at 205 points base. Thats 615 points + a random ass HQ, or Vulkan if you want a hope of victory, so you're looking at 810 points. You get 690 points for your elites/heavy supports/fast attacks. Enjoy.

Compared to most troops from other factions, marines don't suck.

They do everything on an average level.

Space Marines are the US army, our specialists (rangers, etc) are really good at what they do. The standard schmoe exists because, well, we need stuff for the other guy to shoot at.

Re: Standard 40k list size
Tactical marines aren't very bad at all. They just take finnesse to be used right. They are also assistance to other units in the army, but need minor assistance themselves to really flourish (+1 attack if near Pedro,twin-linked everything from Vulkan, fleet with Shrike, etc).
Just analyze who you are fighting and go from there. Of course if you're playing Ta you don't want your Tacs hanging back trying to outshoot them. Send them into the Tau's face and watch the squirming begin. Don't try to out CC Tyranids or Orks. Hang back and blast bolters with a free missile for a few turns. Against other marines do the same thing. If they are Blood Angels, or a very CC oriented nilla list, sit back and shoot. But if they are playing a shooty nilla list, or SW (shooty, like they should be played) you got to go after them.
Just position them right, don't allow them to be charged if they don't need to be charged (placing them on top floors of buildings ), and the game shouldn't turn out half bad. Of course, BA can buy their Tacticals Sang Priests, so they can go and do w.e they want with them :p

After 2k I think the game loses a little bit of its fun for me.. You lose the "cram your strategy" aspect of the game.
