Re: ultramarines trailer
What sucks about this is that these guys are gonna make a crappy ass, straight to video, budget movie, and we're still never going to get a solid full length Warhammer movie made. EVER.

Re: ultramarines trailer
Any full length theatrical budget 40k film, would be raped and turned to crap to appeal to large casual public. You want a real for the fans type of movie, then this is what you have to expect.

That's what I used to think about Lord of the Rings. Come on ! Anythings, possible, it just has to be done well.
I do admit it has to be CGI though. Space Marines are like Superheroes, they just look goofy in real life.

Not a valid comparison - LoTR is a classic masterpiece. The most important thing in that movie was to stay true to the original story. Basicly "Don't fuck it up"
Any Warhammer story would be based on fluff. Nobody outside the hobby knows these stories, so more background information would be required to explain things. With 14+ armies, this would bog things down. You also have the issue that nobody in Warhammer is really the "good guys". You'd have a hard time with a screenplay that doesn't have Order destroy Chaos - pleasing the masses, but souring the taste for fans of the hobby who don't care for The Empire or Bretts.
A perfect example is those aweful AD&D based movies (Jeremy Irons as the evil wizard) where they almost stop the movie at times to explain pen and paper rules and even the half orc is a happy member of the party. We really need more emoticons...... where is the puke option?

Re: ultramarines trailer
I wouldn't say worst compared to most direct to video CG films. This was obviously not going to be a high budget project when they announced it and who was writing the story for it. Maybe if it does really well they will make more with a bit more budget involved.

Re: ultramarines trailer
Well, with Abnett writing the script at least there is hope.
Now,.... if they can make Battlestar Gallactica a hit show on Scyfy,
They could definitely make a Gaunt's Ghosts series that would be successful too.
Someone better eventually recognize that that series is Made for TV.

Man, I watched that second trailer.,
That shit looks like video game quality graphics, not anywhere near what we're used to seeing these days with all the kids movies that come out. Have you seen the Guardians ? That's a ridiculously beautiful movie, , but the problem is, that it's about a bunch of fucking OWLS ...

I don't know why they don't just hire the guys that do the Dawn of War Intros. The cgi for those video game intros looks way better than the trailers for the movie...at least so far.

Re: ultramarines trailer

Yeah, it has an 80 million dollar budget because the author or the publisher took it to a studio and pitched it. Hey, millions of kids loved my book, even though the majority of the worlds consumers have never even heard of it... but girls will like it because the owls look cute and boys will like it because there's fighting and violence. BOOM, ok, here's 80 million dollars, have fun.
So would GW ever pitch 40k to a major studio ? I mean, Jesus christ if the Final Fantasy movies got made, COME ON !! Speaking of those Final Fantasy movies, did you notice that that movie from like 10 years ago, looks better than this crap that GW is about to put out ?
I don't buy it Kyle, .. there's something else going on with GW and the movie idea... and it doesn't just have to do with money.

Problem is you're comparing 40k universe which is a mature audience setting to casual and family friendly properties. Movie studios are afraid of investing big money in any mature only related IP nowadays because of the diluted returns. This is why so many action films and such are raped and are constantly being tweaked into PG-13 films. The next Aliens movie for example, they got Ridley Scott on board again... and the studio want's to turn it into a PG-13 film.... wtf Aliens in PG-13? Did they not learn after the fuck up that was the first AvP?
Family and casual films bring in big money while R rated and mature films usually struggle to do as well. Final Fantasy first CG film was a huge flop at the box office and it closed down the studio that made it, and the 2nd was made by the Japanese themselves and was true to the source material, but yea it looked so much better.... yea and it had more money tossed into it because Final Fantasy is a much bigger property with a huge fan base compared to 40k. 40K while being popular in the gaming world of table top, is still a pretty small property that does not have the huge draw as these other properties. Advent children also apparently had a 100 million dollar budget, and it didn't even get a theatrical release, that is a crazy budget for such a movie, but the FF fan base is huge, especially in Japan.
And yes it has to do with money, because they know a true to the fiction 40K movie is going to be a hard sell in live action, or even in CG. High quality CG films take money.
Dan wrote:I don't know why they don't just hire the guys that do the Dawn of War Intros. The cgi for those video game intros looks way better than the trailers for the movie...at least so far.
Because that CG intro was only a couple minutes long and cost millions to make. Blur Studios made that CG intro and they also for example did the couple minute intros to the new Star Wars MMO coming out "old republic". For about 10 minutes of CG of that quality, it is rumored to have cost over 25 million for just two of these cinematics. It also took a very long time to make while a full length movie would take years and a whole lot of cash.
This movie is being made on the cheap, I highly doubt we will see them spending big money on a high quality film unless this direct to video is some huge success.

Re: ultramarines trailer
Well, yeah of course the trend is to become family friendly, but there are still very successful R rated films being made these days. Let's not forget the Matrix films were R rated, as was 300, gladiator, saving private Ryan.
Ok I get it, these are not animated movies, but let's face it, most of the people who like the movies above would consider going to see a 40k movie if it had a kick ass trailer.
So is GW unwilling to sell the movie rights to a big studio? Do you imagine it's actually every been pitched ? I mean it's the intellectual property we're talking about here right ? 40k is a massive universe with a plethora of characters and settings.
Maybe making a full length feature would increase sales tenfold, maybe not the table top, but at least the video games.

Re: ultramarines trailer
GW has no reason to not try to sell the rights to a big studio, it's just big money that could be made. I just doubt Hollywood sees 40k as something that can be made into a profitable venture and GW is supposed to be very strict with their licensing.
Hollywood would rape the 40k universe to make it more palatable to the general audience as it just likely would not work well as is outside of a small niche viewership. GW in the past has been strict with how their properties are represented to it's licensees so in some way it's a good thing they just don't try and sell out.
It would look silly in live action if true to the universe, and for CG, there just isn't much in the market for R rated CG films that I doubt any studio would really want to invest much money into it.

Re: ultramarines trailer
What if they got the guys who did Beowulf to do a 40k movie. I've heard that many hollywood companies have come to GW to ask to make a 40k movie and they've always refused.
If they did it right with GW overseeing the production, they could do it. They don't really need to water anything down to appeal to a new audience, just serve it as is with a nice introduction to the universe (of at least the imperium) and that should be enough. It's not like there's much complexity to explain anyway.
