Re: Been thinking...
Learn your standard languages, Object Oriented design, and then get familiar with APIs. Practice and learn an SDK or two, such as the Unreal Engine or the Source Engine.
Once you have some skill, join a mod team. The most important thing to have for video game programmer is a portfolio - it's the only way to stand out, as it's very competitive.
During your studies try to figure out what you would like to work on the most - gameplay engines, AI, etc.
Let me know if you want to talk about it some more. I'm a computer programmer and looked into the gaming industry. But I decided I'm just not that into programming.

Re: Been thinking...
I guess, but progamming does count for alot of things if the video game thing doesn't go through. By the way vycem, thanks for the bases, picked em up.

Re: Been thinking...
Also consider when getting into the video game industry:
1.) At crunch time, don't plan on leaving the office for weeks.
2.) A *lot* of developers have a tendency to pay *minimal* and expect employees to take a cut of the retail. This could be a *biiiiig* gamble.
If either of those isn't a deal breaker, go for it.
