My Imperial Guard Empty My Imperial Guard

Ive decided to keep my Guard. I think it was the fact I had some much crap I was overwhelmed. I traded my Grey Knights to Javi who is in the process of painting two boxes of Berserkers and two boxes of Thousands sons for me. This eliminated 4 boxes of unpainted stuff I had and got rid of the Grey knights Id never use.
As for my IG Ive purched 2 more Chimera's and Two Leman's. I also bought two of the new Commisars and three boxes of those snap together Guardsmen. Ive watched all of these Guard players play and Im gonna fully Mechanize my troops, use commisars and field a large force of Shaeffers last chancers which can flank,deepstrike or infiltrate...they will be mounted in one maybe two Chimeras. Every guy in this unit can be equipped with a special or heavy weapon. They can also get power weapons. They are very nasty. I dont know why these IG players have never used them. Most IG players jut field a bunch of foot troops and a tank...and get pounded to oblivion even when they win. I want to try to minimize my losses and dish out as much damage as I can.

I've fielded shaffers last chancers before and I think they're potential for damage and destruction is amazing. However, when you boil down to it they get VERY expensive and die just as easily as a Hardened Veteran does (unless you then spend MORE points on them).

First, you have to take Shaffer and Cage (100 pts total). Then each "last chancer" costs 11. You must upgrade him to a "specialist" for +5 pts (16 pts total) before you can give him any wargear or any special weapons. Now, say you just give him a PW +5 (21 pts). Now he's pretty potent, but a regular squad of guardsmen will knock him outa the park. And thats just for one. To get a squad of 10 your looking at 310 pts BEFORE the chimera. In a 1k or 1500 pt game it just gets to be too much in unit, and thats with almost minimum upgrades. For me at least.

However, they can be very potent. If I were to take them I'd take 4 guys with democharges and drop them all over the board (26 pts for a large blast Str 8 AP 2 shot? Yes please). And then make either a plasma gun unit or a powerweapon unit with Kage and Shaffer in them.


It's really up to playing style but good luck with your mech infantry guard! I personally fight that while they provide mobile firepower the squads are too fragile individually and especially with the new defensive fire rules your only going to get 1 weapon in a turn that you move, which is half the benefit of mechanized.

I personally play an infantry heavy force because I like bringing all of that weight of flashlights on people. Sure I lose a bunch of guys but when I normally outnumber my opponent 3 to 1 I don't mind losing some troops when I'm dealing out damage back.

Luis used them against me.....they might have stood a chance had he not thrown the demo charges straight up in the air, landing in the same squad they came from. in the end, they are str3, Tgh 3 guardsmen. Thier strength is in thier numbers, unless you are talking about armored company. I think they'd be fun to use. I wouldn't use them in a tourney though.....unless you were REALLY good with them.

In a 1000 point army you can have several vehicles, ive had up to 8. I love my IG vehicles, but the trick to them is understanding the codex doctrines. The doctrines allow you to manipulate the list to unbalance the standard codex limitations.

Look here's a typical retarded heavy armor list, of mine, used due to the help of the grenadiers doctrine:

JO (junior officer) hq 40

HH 115 (hh is hellhound)

total 985

That list might seem heavy and tough but but tanks don't necessarily win you the game as I see them as a 1 wound monstrous creature. All it takes is a lucky shot and your nearly 200 pt demolisher is gone, but thats why knowing which add ons are worth it reduces the overall cost and increases their battlefield effectiveness. As an alternative to the grenadiers doctrine I like to use the mechanized doctrine.

Here's a typical mecha-guard list at slightly more than 1000 points:

Platoon HQ with Lascannon 65
Chimera 85
Squad A with lascannon 85
Chimera 85
Squad B with lascannon 85
Chimera 85

Remembering that when using the mechanized doctrine you MUST give a chimera to EVERYONE ABLE to ride in one as per the guard infantry definition on page 55.

I remember that game vs Phill, my guys would throw the demo charges straight up in the air and then cover their heads, it was funny, evry single demo charge that i used landed on my guys, adn as phill says, they are just str 3 and tough 3 humans after all, no mater how many goodies you give them. With Ig you have to go 2 ways, either liek dan does it- Mass infantry or the way Alfred does it- lots of vehicles. Leave the Elite expensive squads to the Space Marines. Schafer would make a nice Elite adition to an army, but i would say only use the last chancers on large games 1850-2000.
And Demo charges are the suck now with the 2d6 scatter rules for template weapons from 5th edition.

I had IG for a brief while, but didnt have the vehicles to support them and armies became to fast and my guys were getting charged like in turn 2. so i got tired of them and i traded them away Smile

He wines and dines his new army, takes it out for a spin, cheezes it out to win some tournament or 2 and then unceremoniously dumps it off at Bartertown for a new, younger army.
